Ancient Rome Comes To Life
The Google Student Blog had a really cool post on "Ancient Rome Comes To Life ". Google has created 3D model of anceint Rome. You get a chance to see what the arena was like in the past. You can see the inside of famous buildings such as churches, or what they thought was a church back then. The program allows you fly over Rome and see the empire from the sky. There is this one building that looked like the emporers home.
As the tour goes on, you can even learn how the romans lived. Anna Bishop, of the Google Earth Education Team says,
"Using the Google Earth controls, you can swoop down from the satellite view to explore the ancient city from street to street and column to column. It's the closest we'll get to StreetView imagery from 320 AD!"
After seeing this imagery, my own interest in Gladiators was spurred. I began looking at diffrent blogs about gladiators and how they lived.
Gladiators were mostly war prisoners, or slaves. Professional gladiators were men that were free, that wanted to become gladiators and money. Gladiators in the ludi they had been trained like they were the best of the best. The war prisoners could earn their freedom in 3-5 years in combat. Even though they only fought 3-5 times a year only a few made it to freedom. Most of the war prisoners uniforms were made out of: Samnite, they also had a shield called (called scutum).
They had some type of shield on their leg such as a piece of metal (ocrea) on the left leg, a helmet with a visor of some sort (galea), and a sword (gladius). One other thing in the area was a mercy thing. We believe that they had a sign to kill the opponent: put their thumbs down if they wanted him dead, if they wanted him alive they put their thumbs up. I. The person who had been defeated they would get on their keens and the winner would kill him. The winner would receive a prize; it would probably be something golden. They also received a palm leaf that meant he had won the battle.
